Recycling Hard Drives – Full Destruction Service

Posted on

What is a Hard Drive?

A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive, hard disk, or disk drive) is a device for storing and retrieving digital information, primarily computer data.

It consists of one or more rigid (hence “hard”) rapidly rotating discs (often referred to as platters), coated with magnetic material and with magnetic heads arranged to write data to the surfaces and read it from them.

Why do hard drives need to be destroyed securely?

Hard drives contain all of the key data of a computer system. Many companies have information stored on their systems which is secure data and they must have proof that the data is destroyed and not going to get into anyone elses hands.

Hard drives can be wiped using certain software, but there is no better assurance than having the drive physically shredded into tiny pieces giving you complete piece of mind that the data is destroyed.

AWA Refiners Hard Drive Destruction

At AWA we offer a complete service to destroy your hard drives. All drives are shredded and once this is complete we can offer a certificate of destruction to show that the work has been completed.

Once the drives are shredded they are then sent for recycling. The precious metals are extracted from the plastics and all materials are then recycled with 0% going to landfill.

Payment

Not only do AWA Refiners offer a complete destruction of your hard drives; but as we are one of the leading precious metal refiners in the Uk we also offer you a payment for your drives.

Hard drives contain printed circuit boards which are rich in gold, silver, palladium and copper. Although the boards are shredded we can still extract the precious metals enabling us to offer you a good price for your hard drives.

A lot of companies charge to destroy hard drives – AWA pay for your scrap hard drives!!

Most Popular Product Delivered In Jan – Expansion Cards

Posted on

Expansions Cards

The expansion card (also expansion board, adapter card or accessory card) in computing is a printed circuit board that can be inserted into an expansion slot of a computer motherboard to add functionality to a computer system.

Graphics Card

One edge of the expansion card holds the contacts (the edge connector) that fit exactly into the slot. They establish the electrical contact between the electronics (mostly integrated circuits) on the card and on the motherboard.

Connectors mounted on the bracket allow the connection of external devices to the card. Around one to seven expansion cards can be added to a computer system. 19 or more expansion cards can be installed in backplane systems.

The primary purpose of an expansion card is to provide or expand on features not offered by the motherboard.

Up Stat!

Statistics On The Up!

AWA Refiners Ltd has processed a record tonnage of expansion cards throughout the month of January increasing our intake of PCB’s up to our highest ever statistics.

Product Of The Week – Scrap Computer Boards (Motherboards)

Posted on

What Is A Motherboard?

In personal computers, a motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) and holds many of the crucial components of the system. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board. It is also sometimes casually shortened to mobo.

History

Prior to the arrival of the microprocessor, a computer was usually built in a card-cage case or mainframe with components connected by a backplane consisting of a set of slots themselves connected with wires; in very old designs the wires were discrete connections between card connector pins, but printed circuit boards soon became the standard practice.

The Central Processing Unit, memory and peripherals were housed on individual printed circuit boards which plugged into the backplate.  In the late 1980s, motherboards began to include single ICs (called Super I/O chips) capable of supporting a set of low-speed peripherals: keyboard, mouse, floppy disk drive, serial ports, and parallel ports. As of the late 1990s, many personal computer motherboards supported a full range of audio, video, storage, and networking functions without the need for any expansion cards at all; higher-end systems for 3D gaming and computer graphics typically retained only the graphics card as a separate component.

Recycling Of Scrap Motherboards

AWA Laboratory

AWA Refiners will value and offer competitive rates for unused or scrap computer boards, in order to recycle or refine them for any precious metals they may contain.

Scrap gold, silver, palladium and copper can be found in motherboards. Gold is an excellent conductor of electricity and highly resistant to corrosion, which makes it an attractive proposition for manufacturers to use in contact points within small computer chips.

What Do We Look For?

Using the latest technology, our technicians will strip the boards of any components that have metallic properties present in our controlled laboratory environment. Examples of computer board scrap, and their materials, include:

  • Integrated circuits that contain gold
  • Re-useable circuits that can be re-distributed
  • Gold-plated plugs or connectors that may be refined
  • Other substrates that contain precious metals that can be treated as a payable material
  • Edge connectors that can be chemically refined.

Leading Buyers Of Scrap Computer Motherboards

Metal Of The Week – Pewter

Posted on

Pewter:

a malleable metal alloy, traditionally 85–99% tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, bismuth and lead.

Pewter Mug

Copper and antimony act as hardeners while lead is common in the lower grades of pewter, which have a bluish tint. It has a low melting point, around 170–230 °C (338–446°F), depending on the exact mixture of metals.

The word pewter is probably a variation of the word spelter, a colloquial name for zinc.

History

Pewter was first used around the beginning of the Bronze Age in the Near East. The earliest piece of pewter found is from an Egyptian tomb from 1450 BC.

Scrap Pewter

AWA purchase scrap pewter in various forms. Hollow pewter is the most common, consisting of jugs, bowls, plates and ornaments which we smelt into large ingots for recycling back into the industry.

Counter pewter is also common at AWA Refiners. This pewter was used in manufacturing bar counter tops. A lot of bars are now replacing these with more modern style materials therefore creating scrap counter pewter for smelting.

Metal Of The Week: Inconel

Posted on

X-15 Aircraft made using Inconel

Inconel

Refers to a family of austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloys which are typically used in high temperature applications.

It is often referred to in English as “Inco”. Common trade names for Inconel include: Inconel 625, Chronin 625, Altemp 625, Haynes 625, Nickelvac 625 and Nicrofer 6020.[2]

F1 Engine (made using Inconel)

Inconel is often encountered in extreme environments. It is common in gas turbine blades, seals, and combustors, as well as turbocharger rotors and seals, high temperature fasteners, chemical processing and pressure vessels, heat exchanger tubing, firearm sound suppressor blast baffles, and in Formula One racing.

Famous Inconel Constructions:

North American Aviation constructed the skin of the X-15 rocket

McLaren Supercar (Exhaust System made using Inco)

plane out of an Inconel alloy known as “Inconel X”.

Rocketdyne used Inconel X-750 for the thrust chamber of the F-1 rocket engine used in the first stage of the Saturn V Booster.

McLaren used Inconel for the lightweight Sport Exhaust of a recent supercar, the McLaren MP4-12C.

A.W.A Refiners are buyers of Inconel in all physical forms and alloys.
